One in seven 'lies for cheaper insurance'
One in seven people has lied to an insurer in a bid to keep premiums down, according to a new survey.
Research by Shariah compliant car and home insurer Salaam Halal insurance found that 14 per cent of people applying for insurance deliberately withheld or understated information or provided inaccurate details to obtain a lower quote for cover.
The most common deception is to claim that a car is parked in a garage when it is really parked on a road, while 35 per cent of car owners also understated their annual mileage for the year ahead.
One in three applicants for home insurance misled insurers on the value of home contents and nearly one in ten falsely claimed the house was equipped with a burglar alarm.
